Kanter Named Chancellor by Board of Trustees

kanter: The Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees on May 12 named Martha J. Kanter, Ed.D., as chancellor of the district.

“Martha is tremendously talented, and has a broad range of skills and experiences that will serve our district well as chancellor,” said Mary Mason, president of the board. “Her vision, local and statewide leadership, and dedication to our students are truly remarkable. She will lead the district through our current challenges and into a bright and innovative future.”

“I am thrilled to accept the privilege of serving as the fifth chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District,” said Kanter. “I look forward to working with the board, faculty, staff, students and residents of our district for many years to come.”

Kanter has been president of De Anza College for 10 years. Prior to her current position, she served for three years as vice president of instruction and student services at San Jose City College and for three years as vice chancellor of policy analysis and research for the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office. She holds an Ed.D. in higher education administration from the University of San Francisco; an M.Ed. with a concentration in clinical psychology and public practice from Harvard University; and a B.A. in sociology from Brandeis University.

Kanter has served as president of several statewide associations, including the Association of California Community College Administrators (ACCCA); the Learning Assessment Retention Consortium (LARC); and the California Association of Postsecondary Educators of the Disabled (CAPED). She is vice-chair of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, Inc., and a trustee of the San Jose Museum of Art. She is a director on the boards for Partners in School Innovation, CityYear/Americorps, the Community College Leadership Development Institute, the Public Dialogue Consortium, the Educational Equity Policy Advisory Committee of the California Postsecondary Education Commission, and the Center for the Study of Community Colleges at UCLA. She also serves on several nonprofit boards in Silicon Valley and statewide and is a senior fellow of the American Leadership Forum-Silicon Valley. Nationally, she is chair of the Community College Advisory Panel of The College Board.

Kanter is slated to assume the post of chancellor on or about July 1. This will conclude the process that began with the departure in January of former Chancellor Leo Chavez to become executive vice president of Community Foundation Silicon Valley. Lois A. Callahan, Ed.D., a longtime community college administrator, was named interim chancellor. A nationwide search for a permanent replacement ensued, undertaken with the assistance of the Association of Community College Trustees (ACCT). A 13-member search committee, comprised of faculty, staff, a student and two community members, reviewed applications, interviewed semifinalists and presented four finalists to the board for its consideration. During the week of April 28, the finalists participated in well-attended forums at both colleges and the district office, with faculty, staff, students and community members providing written feedback to the board.

“The board looks forward to the visionary leadership that Martha will provide for the district,” Mason said.
