Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q: Why does the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District need an apartment complex?

A: The lack of affordable housing in our area is well-documented and is a significant barrier to a higher education for students in our community. By securing dedicated student housing, the District is making a long-term investment in student, community and economic sustainability.

Q: How is this getting paid for?

A: This purchase is part of voter-approved Measure G, an $898 million general obligation measure to upgrade facilities preparing students/veterans for university transfer and careers in fields such as healthcare, nursing, technology, engineering/sciences; to upgrade and repair aging classrooms as well as labs for science, technology, engineering/math-related fields of instruction; and to acquire, construct, repair facilities, equipment and sites; and ti plan, construct, acquire or contribute to affordable employee and student housing units. It was passed on March 3, 2020, by 58.8%.

Q: Why did the District select this property for affordable student housing?

A: The McClellan Terrace Apartments meet all the criteria to serve the colleges' needs, providing a viable solution to student housing challenges. It is within a one-mile radius of the De Anza campus; has no known environmental concerns; no deed restrictions or covenants that affect the district’s ability to utilize it as intended.

Q: When will current tenants need to relocate?

A: Current tenants will be allowed to remain in their apartments if they would like until June 30, 2026. Existing leases will remain in place and all tenants will be able to extend their lease (at the same rate) up until June 30, 2026.  Relocation assistance will be provided to all current residents

Q: Will the District provide relocation support?

A: The District is committed to a human-centered approach, offering relocation assistance and services to tenants and families. Relocation assistance includes helping tenants find comparable housing locally and providing financial assistance to qualified tenants. If the District decides to proceed with the acquisition after its due diligence, the District will develop a formal relocation assistance program that the District will share with all tenants.

Q: Who will be allowed to live in the affordable student housing complex?

A: All students of Foothill College and DeAnza College are eligible to live in housing. We are finalizing a rubric for prioritization and will share once it is ready.

Q. Will tenants be forced out?

A: No. The District will allow all tenants to remain in their units under their existing leases (at the same rate) until June 30, 2026.  Relocation assistance (for example, moving and storage expenses) will be provided to all current tenants.

Q: I heard that this housing is for international students. Is that true?

A: All Foothill College and De Anza College students are eligible to to live in housing, but we will be releasing a rubric soon that demonstrates which student groups will be prioritized. It is our primary mission as a community college to serve the students and the needs of our immediate region.

Q: When will students be allowed to move in?

A: Some student occupancy is expected to begin in August or September 2025, depending on available units in time for the start of the fall quarter.
