Trauma on the Campus: The Story Behind What We See

This workshop provides a foundational understanding of trauma, its impact on the nervous system, and how it secretly shapes student behaviors and interactions with faculty, classified staff, and peers. We will explore how trauma manifests in the classroom and throughout a student’s daily journey on our campuses. The workshop will also address the realities faced by students living in communities where trauma is prevalent and formal support is limited, helping faculty and staff build awareness of how historical and current traumatic experiences intersect with learning.

Participants will explore how to recognize when trauma and adverse childhood experiences may be influencing a student's engagement or responses. We will discuss realistic and manageable strategies that can support students when triggers occur. Participants will leave with resources to guide students toward support, preparing them to be successful in academics, workforce, and community. Our goal is to educate and build confidence and not to add to the demands on our staff and faculty.

This workshop is facilitated by a multidisciplinary team — a professor and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist certified in complex and childhood trauma, an EOPS counselor, and a college-based therapist — bringing together clinical expertise, academic experience, and direct student support services to offer a well-rounded, grounded perspective.

Presenters: Florina Petcu, Psychology Instructor; Lisa Slede, Counselor for Psychological Services; Melvishia Gaines, Student Success Specialist for EOPS

From Statewide Innovation to Local Impact: How Digital Center Initiatives Strengthen Foothill-De Anza CCD

As home to the California Community Colleges Digital Center for Innovation, Transformation, and Equity (Digital Center), Foothill–De Anza Community College District plays a unique role in supporting statewide technology innovation while also strengthening local institutional capacity through its Educational Technology Services (ETS) division.
