LEED® Certified Platinum

kirsch 200:

Built with considerable input (financial and planning) from students, community, and faculty, the Kirsch Center at De Anza College is the lead demonstration building for energy innovation and sustainability in the California Community College system.

Winner of the 2007 Livable Buildings Award by the Center for the Built Environment (CBE) at the University of California, Berkeley, the building's various structural and utility systems are exposed to view for students. A real-time display shows the power generated by the photovoltaic panels.

"...leading by example, creating a hands-on, organic learning environment that serves as a living, breathing reminder of the fragile state of the planet on which we live -- and society's charge to protect it."

Thanks to the work of the student group WISE 37 (Working to Institute a Sustainable Environment on the 37th Parallel), and the dining services management and staff, the De Anza College dining services now offers a salad bar and sandwiches featuring organic produce from ALBA Farms in Salinas. The non-profit ALBA (Agriculture and Land-Based Training Association) creates opportunities for small-scale aspiring farmers to grow and sell crops from two organize farms in Monterey County.

:: Green Energy & Facilities Operations

Working to save our natural resources & produce our own energy

1991-1992 to 2005-2006 academic years use/ASF

  • 17% reduction in electricity

  • 8% reduction in natural gas

Replaced grass at Foothill College stadium with artificial turf made of recycled materials -- Water savings = 25% of campus total

Installed 780 kilowatts of solar electric and energy-efficient cogeneration projects, including:

  • Eight 60-kilowatt micro turbines to generate electricity

  • Heat recovery systems for the campus pools

  • Solar photovoltaic-panels on parking structures that generate 302 kilowatts of electricity and provide shade for cars and humans

  • A more efficient boiler for Foothill College

  • Centralized HVAC system controls

Additional repair, replacement, and upgrading of electrical and mechanical systems and additional solar panels are planned from the Measure C facilities and construction projects
