Jan. 27 Forum Opens Community Dialogue on Budget Choices

What lies ahead for local community colleges as education funding declines?

That question is the centerpiece of a community dialogue with members of the Foothill-DeAnza Community College District Board of Trustees on Wednesday, Jan. 27 from 7-9 p.m. at the Los Altos Public Library, 12 San Antonio Road.

The forum is sponsored by the library and the Leagues of Women Voters of Los Altos/Mountain View, Palo Alto and Cupertino/Sunnyvale.

“Colleges face difficult times and tough decisions,” explained Sue Graham, president of the Los Altos/Mountain View League, “and all of us have a stake in their success. People may have children who plan to attend community college. Or, they themselves may need job retraining or want enrichment classes.“

At the forum, people can find out what issues the colleges face as budgets tighten and how fund constraints might affect the core mission. Attendees can also let the trustees know what they think the colleges’ priorities should be.

The Jan. 27 community college forum kicks off a monthly series of public forums that spotlight hot-button national, state and local issues.

The series, called “Hot Topics,” will examine national, state and local health care reform Feb. 8 at the Los Altos Library. The state senate plans to take up the California Universal Healthcare Act (SB 810) in 2010.

On March 8 at Los Altos Library, environmental experts will explore state, federal and international cap and trade programs for limiting greenhouse gas emissions. They also will look at who supports and opposes the two approaches, and at alternatives such as the carbon tax.

Future hot topic programs will focus on local housing issues, on the California constitutional reform movements and on issues facing California’s public schools. For more information on the Jan. 27 meeting with the community college trustees or on the Hot Topics series, contact the Los Altos League at 650-941-4846 or http://www.lwvlamv.org>www.lwvlamv.org.
