A search committee that reviewed applicants to serve as the next chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District has forwarded the names of two finalists to the Board of Trustees.
The finalists, both community college presidents, will visit Foothill-De Anza to meet members of the college community and participate in open forums on Nov. 18 and 19. (See schedule of events below.) The Board of Trustees is expected to name a chancellor next month.
The finalists are Brian King, who will visit the district on Nov. 18, and Linda M. Thor, who will visit the district on Nov. 19. Both candidates have significant experience as community college administrators and hold doctorate degrees. More information about them is available at the district’s home page, http://www.fhda.edu.
"I am very pleased with the excellent caliber of the finalists,’’ said Betsy Bechtel, president of the Board of Trustees and a member of the search committee. “They were selected after a nationwide search and extensive interview sessions with the search committee, which worked diligently to identify applicants to lead our district.’’
King is president of Cabrillo College in Aptos, CA., a position he has held since 2004. Cabrillo is a comprehensive community college with a credit enrollment of more than 17,000 students. In addition to its main campus, it operates satellite locations in Watsonville and Scotts Valley. Cabrillo has completed or has underway more than $250 million in capital improvement projects made possible by voter-approved bond measures. King was previously vice president of administration and business at Ozarks Technical Community College in Missouri.
Thor is president of Rio Salado College in Phoenix, AZ., a position she has held since 1990. Rio Salado is part of the 10-college Maricopa Community Colleges. It is a “college without walls” and specializes in serving working adults through distance learning, customized degrees with corporations and government, and accelerated learning programs, including dual enrollment for high school students. Rio Salado serves approximately 48,000 credit and 12,000 non-credit students a year. Thor was previously president of West Los Angeles College.
The 16-member search committee included representatives of the faculty, classified staff, administration, students, community and the Board of Trustees. The committee reviewed applications, interviewed semifinalists and this week presented the two finalists for the board’s consideration. The nationwide search began in June and was assisted by a professional search consultant. Jane Enright, former district vice chancellor of human resources and equal opportunity, served as the search coordinator.
Since former chancellor Martha J. Kanter departed for the post of U.S. under secretary of education, Mike Brandy, a retired district vice chancellor, has served as interim chancellor.
