Trustees to Fill Board Vacancy

 

Foothill-De Anza Community College District is seeking applicants who are interested in completing an unexpired term on the Board of Trustees. The vacancy was created by the resignation of trustee Hal Plotkin, effective July 7. Plotkin is leaving the area to serve as senior policy advisor to Under Secretary of Education Martha Kanter, the recently departed chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza District.

The Board of Trustees will appoint a district resident on Aug. 31 to complete the remainder of Plotkin’s term, which expires the first Monday in December 2011. The appointed trustee could choose to stand for election in November 2011.

Applicants for the position must be registered voters and residents of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. The district encompasses Cupertino, Palo Alto, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, most of Sunnyvale and parts of San Jose, Santa Clara, Saratoga and unincorporated Santa Clara County. Applications of no more than four pages must be received no later than 5 p.m. Monday, Aug. 17.

An orientation meeting will be held for all applicants on Aug. 6 from 9-10 a.m.

In addition, applicants are invited to attend a Board of Trustees' Aug. 3 study session in the Foothill-De Anza Board Room from 2:30-4:30 p.m. to hear updates on the district's 2009-10 budget, strategic planning efforts, Measures E and C bond programs and the NASA Research Park project.

Those who wish to apply must submit a resumé and a letter of application summarizing their experience, education and interest relative to the mission of the Board of Trustees and the board’s roles and responsibilities. Both the mission and the roles and responsibilities are available for review on the district’s web site, http://www.fhda.edu/about_us/board/mission; or by calling the chancellor’s office at (650) 949-6100; or emailing trustee_appointment@fhda.edu.

The application, consisting of a resumé and letter of application, must be limited to four pages. The application letter should address the following questions:

• Why did you apply for the position? How does the Foothill-De Anza trustee position fit your personal and professional goals?
• How do you define and evaluate ethics in the decisions and behavior of a trustee?
• How would you balance competing needs in a collective bargaining environment?

All applications will be forwarded for review to members of the Board of Trustees. Any candidate selected by at least two trustees will be invited to interview with the board at 3 p.m. Monday, Aug. 31, during a public meeting. The board will appoint a new trustee at that meeting.

The Board of Trustees consists of seven members; five are elected at large to four-year terms, and two are student trustees who are elected annually by students at Foothill and De Anza colleges. The board meets on Mondays once or twice a month, as needed, typically starting at 5 p.m. Trustees are compensated in accordance with California Education Code section 72425, not to exceed $750 a month, and are eligible to participate in the district’s health benefits plan.

The Foothill-De Anza Community College District serves more than 45,000 students a year at two campuses, Foothill College in Los Altos Hills and De Anza College in Cupertino, and has an total annual budget of about $335 million.
