The Foothill-De Anza Community College District has been reaffirmed for board membership in the League for Innovation in the Community College. The League for Innovation is a groundbreaking international organization committed to improving community colleges through innovation, experimentation and institutional transformation. The organization hosts conferences and institutes, develops publications and Web resources, conducts research, provides services, and leads projects and initiatives with member colleges, corporate partners and other agencies.
Only 19 community colleges nationwide are approved for board membership in the League for Innovation. Foothill-De Anza was a founding member of the league, which was created in 1968.
“We are proud to continue our active involvement in the League for Innovation,” said Martha J. Kanter, chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District. “Membership in the league is an exceptional opportunity for our faculty and staff to share and engage in new, deeper forms of learning and leadership in order to promote the highest quality educational opportunities for our students.” Kanter will continue to serve on the League for Innovation Board of Directors.
“Foothill-De Anza has long been nationally known for innovation and excellence,” said League for Innovation Board President P. Anthony “Tony” Zeiss, who serves as president of Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, N.C. “The League for Innovation is pleased, after extensive peer review, to honor Foothill-De Anza with reaffirmation as a member.”
The district has worked with its league colleagues to bring a range of innovative academic initiatives to classrooms and student services, including testing models of collaborative learning, learning communities, distance learning, the scholarship of teaching, and learning outcomes. In 2000, Foothill College was one of only 16 colleges nationwide selected to participate in the League for Innovation’s 21st Century Learning Outcomes Project, developing a set of core competencies in knowledge, skills and attributes graduates should have, determining assessment methods and promoting awareness of learning activities.
The Foothill-De Anza Community College District in March submitted its institutional self-evaluation—a comprehensive overview of the district’s programs and services—to the League for Innovation in application for continued membership. The document may be viewed at http://www.fhda.edu/league_for_innovation_report. In July, Foothill-De Anza hosted league officials, including then-President Mark Milliron, to highlight some of the district’s key programs and services.
Other community colleges approved for membership in the league were Dallas County Community College District, Seattle Community College District and Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio.
One of the largest community college districts in the United States, Foothill-De Anza provides credit classes for about 45,000 students per quarter, serving the communities of Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Sunnyvale and portions of San Jose.
