Kanter Inaugurated As Chancellor

kanter:

Martha J. Kanter was formally inaugurated on November 19 as the fifth chancellor of the Foothill-De Anza Community College District with an installation ceremony at Foothill College's Robert C. Smithwick Theater and a reception at the Campus Center.

"In assuming the position of chancellor, I have been given a precious gift," Kanter said in her inauguration speech, "Advancing Foothill-De Anza's Legacy of Opportunity and Excellence."

"It is the gift of leadership and the privilege of working with a group of remarkable educators to deliver an extraordinary education to each student who arrives at our doors," she continued. "Our colleges are recognized as jewels among America's community colleges because everyone in the Foothill-De Anza family has a deeply personal commitment to give an exemplary education to our students." (Click here for the full text of the Kanter Inaugural Speech.)

The Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees--Paul Fong, Edward A. "Sandy" Hay, Andrea Leiderman, Mary Mason, Judith Moss and student trustees Sarah Wiehe of Foothill and Adam Welch of De Anza--hosted the inauguration, which was attended by faculty, staff, students and community members. Fong served as presiding officer of the ceremony, while Mason delivered the investiture of office. Welch and Wiehe presented a resolution from the Associated Students of Foothill College (ASFC) and the De Anza Student Body (DASB). Foothill President Bernadine Chuck Fong and De Anza Interim President Judy C. Miner also had key roles in the ceremony.

The keynote speaker was Manuel Pastor, Ph.D., who is director of the Center for Justice, Tolerance, and Community and professor of Latin American and Latino Studies at University of California, Santa Cruz. His topic was "Restoring the California Dream: Economic Realities, Social Challenges and the Role of Community Colleges." (See Pastor Keynote Address.)

Community greetings were delivered by former state Sen. Rebecca Morgan, who is president of the Morgan Family Foundation and former president and CEO of Joint Venture: Silicon Valley Network, Inc.

Music at the ceremony and reception was provided by student groups from both colleges, including the Foothill Gospel Choir and The Vintage Singers of De Anza College, as well as De Anza's brass quintet, woodwind and saxophone quartets and chamber orchestra.

The inauguration was made possible by generous contributions from premier sponsor Gilbane Building Co., as well as DES Architects + Engineers, Perkins & Will, Sandis Humber Jones and Sugimora & Associates. Allana-Lippert Architects + Engineers, Architerra and Hagensen Pacific Construction also contributed. No district funds were used for the event.
