Letter from Chancellor Martha Kanter

The Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) is one of six regional associations that accredit public and private schools, colleges, and universities in the United States. WASC has three commissions to carry out its work, including the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges (ACCJC) that evaluates and accredits public and private postsecondary institutions that offer two-year education programs and award the associate degree.

As part of the re-accreditation process, community colleges must prepare a Self-Study for Re-Accreditation report on a six-year cycle. The Foothill-De Anza Board of Trustees was provided a synopsis of the self-study reports at each of the State of the College meetings (May 16, 2005 for Foothill and June 6, 2005 for De Anza). The colleges completed their self-studies shortly thereafter and the Board of Trustees approved them on June 20, 2005.

During October 17-20, 2005, ACCJC will send a visiting team to each college. These teams are generally drawn from community college faculty, staff, administrators and trustees who volunteer and are selected by ACCJC to participate in the rigorous peer review and evaluation process. Each visiting team conducts its review following completion of the college self-studies in order to determine the extent to which an institution meets the four accreditation standards or six accreditation themes. Team members, selected for their expertise from member institutions, make recommendations for improvement to an institution, commend exemplary practices, and provide both the college and the Accrediting Commission with a formal report of their findings that become the basis for the next six-year cycle. During their visit, team members will meet with individuals and constituencies throughout the District and conduct an on-site review of college and Central Services programs.
